Variables Impacting Execution

VAR:WEATHER

Seasons & Atmosphere

Canadian Prairie corridors can add 1 to 3 days during winter storms. BC mountain passes see avalanche closures. Peak shipping seasons (Q4, Chinese New Year) increase ocean transit times and reduce carrier capacity.

VAR:CUSTOMS

Regulatory Clearance

Pre-cleared shipments (PARS/PAPS) cross the Canada-US border in under an hour. Incomplete documentation, first-time importers, or regulated goods can add 0.5 to 2 business days.

VAR:CARGO

Commodity Profile

Dangerous goods, oversized loads, and temperature-controlled freight may require specialized carriers with different transit schedules. Perishable goods are prioritized for faster routing.

VAR:TIMING

Operational Cut-offs

Transit days do not include the day of pickup. Submitting pickup requests before 3 p.m. local time ensures same-day pickup. Late requests may shift the start by one business day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about shipping transit times.

Common questions about freight transit times and shipping timelines.

How accurate are these transit time estimates?
These estimates are based on published carrier data and industry averages. Actual transit times vary based on weather, customs clearance, carrier capacity, and other factors. Contact Robin Transportation for an exact quote tailored to your shipment.
Do these transit times include customs clearance?
Ground transit times for Canada-US routes assume pre-cleared customs documentation (PARS/PAPS). For first-time importers or regulated goods, add 0.5 to 2 business days. Ocean transit times are port-to-port and do not include inland delivery or destination customs processing.
What is the difference between FTL and LTL transit times?
FTL (Full Truckload) shipments move on a dedicated truck with no intermediate stops, so they are typically 1 to 3 days faster than LTL. LTL (Less Than Truckload) shipments are consolidated with other freight and may make multiple stops at carrier terminals.
What is the difference between Ocean FCL and LCL?
FCL (Full Container Load) moves in a dedicated container. LCL (Less than Container Load) is consolidated with other cargo. LCL typically adds 5 to 10 business days for consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at destination. The ocean sailing time is identical.
How does weather affect Canadian freight transit times?
Winter weather can add 1 to 3 business days on Prairie corridors (Winnipeg to Calgary, Edmonton) due to highway closures and extreme cold. BC mountain passes (Rogers Pass, Coquihalla) can add 0.5 to 1 day per storm event. Plan extra time for shipments between November and March.
Can Robin Transportation provide faster transit times?
Yes. We offer expedited and dedicated vehicle options for time-sensitive shipments across Canada and into the US. Same-day service may be available on short-haul corridors like Toronto to Montreal. Contact us for a custom quote. We respond within 15 minutes.
