💼 Trade Wars Stir Uncertainty, but Forwarders See Opportunity

As new US tariffs shake global markets, logistics players remain cautiously optimistic. While the China-US lane has lost dominance—now just 14% of China’s exports—forwarders are adapting fast, shifting focus to booming APAC trade and warehousing in US free-trade zones. Despite tariffs as high as 54% on some nations, forwarders may benefit from the complex administrative landscape, offering services like compliance and bonded storage. While shippers scramble to adjust, many forwarders are finding new opportunities in the chaos, even as global GDP faces potential strain.

🌍Ocean Trade Faces Pressure as Overcapacity Builds

Despite weak demand, ocean carriers have ramped up capacity on Asia-Europe routes, with a 27% increase since Chinese New Year, far exceeding seasonal norms. Sea-Intelligence points to this oversupply, combined with softening global volumes and new US tariffs, as key drivers behind the steep fall in spot rates and growing concerns of overcapacity in 2025.

💼 Frankfurt Airport Strike Disrupts Flights and Cargo OperationsFrankfurt Airport, Europe’s top air cargo hub, faces major disruptions on Monday due to a 24-hour strike by Germany’s Verdi union, demanding higher wages. The walkout will halt essential operations and impact cargo and connecting flights. Other major airports, including Cologne and Leipzig, will also be affected. Talks resume March 14-16, but Verdi insists pressure is needed to drive negotiations forward.

🌍Canada and EU Hit Back at U.S. Tariffs as Trade War EscalatesCanada is striking back against U.S. tariffs on aluminum and steel, imposing $29.8 billion in counterlevies while urging Washington to resume negotiations. Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc called the tariffs "unjustified," warning they will harm both economies. The EU is also retaliating, announcing US$28 billion in tariffs on U.S. goods, targeting steel, industrial products, and agriculture. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the move "strong but proportionate." Talks are set for Thursday in Washington, aiming to de-escalate tensions before further tariffs take effect on April 2.
